Looking for a black psychologist, or brown psychologist, a person of color psychologist or counselor who understands your cultural background and can help you without stereotyping or prejudice? I have compiled a list of Black psychologists, coaches, and other professionals of color who meet three important criteria:
- Accessibility: You can passively collect information about these professionals via their website or online page before you make an appointment. This way, you can determine if they’re the right fit for you before investing time and money.
- The likelihood of becoming your therapist: All of the professionals on my list are self-employed or work at small practices. I purposely did not include individuals who work within large organizations because they often cannot guarantee that they will become your care provider.
- Background/ethnicity: I understand that cultural understanding is crucial when it comes to therapy, coaching, or counseling. For this reason, I have only included information about professionals’ backgrounds/ethnicities if they have mentioned it on their website.
Reimbursement
Whether or not the mental health care you need will be reimbursed depends on various factors, such as whether the care provider is affiliated with a health insurer and the extent of your health insurance package. To determine the specifics of your situation, it is best to discuss your options with the care provider you have chosen. It is worth noting that reimbursement does not always equate to better or more affordable care. However, it is still best to discuss this with your chosen care provider, as it simply means that they have established agreements with your health insurer.
Investing in mental health care is invaluable, as it forms the foundation of your daily life. Your mental health has an impact on the way you interact with yourself, others, and your children. Moreover, your child’s mental health affects their ability to perform well in school, sports, and social situations with adults and peers. When considering the price of mental health care, remember that choosing a smaller practice over a larger organization allows you to build a more direct and personal relationship with your counselor, and your investment goes directly to supporting a hardworking and passionate counselor dedicated to helping families. So, don’t be blinded by the price tag, approach your care provider with a serious plan, and prioritize your mental well-being.
