Shared cars
Some 3,250 shared cars are available in Amsterdam, and this number is growing all the time. See an overview of providers below.
Both commercial organisations and private residents can offer cars for sharing. You can choose between shared cars with or without a fixed parking place. Cars with a fixed parking place must be returned to the same place or zone (round-trip cars). βFree-floatingβ cars can be parked and left anywhere within the service area without charge. In some cases they can be left in another city.
What does it cost?
A private car can easily cost between β¬250 and β¬450 per month. That is a waste of money if you donβt travel by car every day. A shared car costs about β¬25 per day (excluding price per kilometre). A shared car is cheaper if you drive less than 10,000 km per year.

Private car-sharing
If you really do want to own your own car, then you might like to think about sharing it, using a service such as SnappCar for example. This is a way of earning a little extra money. If you only share occasionally, it has no implications for your income tax.

Map with shared cars
MyWheels is a car sharing service similar to GreenWheels. It operates with a fleet of 2,500 cars in the Netherlands, with over half of them being electric vehicles. In the Amsterdam area alone, MyWheels has nearly 1,000 vehicles.
MyWheels is part of The Sharing Group and in 2022, it acquired ConnectCar, which had a strong presence in Amsterdam.
The cars in the MyWheels fleet are categorized as Small (Skoda CITIGOe, Citroen C1, Fiat 500), Medium (Renault ZOE, Citroen C3, Opel Corsa), or Special (Hyundai Kona, Ford Focus Wagon).
Similar to GreenWheels, MyWheels allows car rentals through their app, website, or using an OV-chip card. There are minimal differences between the two services, so it’s advisable to check the availability of vehicles in your local area before making a choice.
ShareNow
SHARE NOW is a car sharing service that was formed through the merger of Car2Go (Daimler AG) and DriveNow (BMW Group). It operates in several European cities, including Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam, SHARE NOW offers a fleet of 400 electric cars, ranging from the 2-seater Smart EQ to the small Fiat 500e and Peugeot e-208 (4 seats), as well as the medium-sized BMW i3 (5 seats). The service has gained 120,000 regular customers in the city.
To locate and rent a SHARE NOW vehicle, users need to utilize the dedicated app and use a personal PIN code to unlock the car.
Rental costs for SHARE NOW start at β¬0.19 per minute for rentals up to 2 hours. For longer rentals ranging from 2 hours to 30 days, there is a fixed rate in addition to β¬0.19 per kilometer driven.
For instance, a 6-hour rental would cost β¬33.99 (XS), β¬37.99 (S), or β¬55.48 (M), plus the β¬0.19 per kilometer charge.
A 1-day rental would cost β¬49.99 (XS), β¬59.99 (S), or β¬79.99 (M), plus the β¬0.19 per kilometer charge.
SHARE NOW provides β¬4 of driving credit if users connect the car to a charging point when the battery level is below 30%.
It’s important to note that there is an additional surcharge of β¬8.99 for picking up or dropping off a car at Schiphol Airport. Additionally, a smaller surcharge of β¬2.99 applies to designated “zone A” drop-offs, which include locations like Amstelveen, Amsterdam Noord, Overhoeks, and Zuidoost.
SHARE NOW cars can be parked for free in public parking spots throughout Amsterdam, and users have the flexibility to end their trips anywhere within the Amsterdam “Home Area,” which covers most of the city.
SHARE NOW is available to individuals aged 18 and above who hold a valid driver’s license for at least one year. Please note that small and medium cars have a minimum age requirement of 21.

GreenWheels:
In addition to the subscription fee, Greenwheels applies an hourly rental charge and a distance charge. It’s possible to switch subscription plans at any time.
For longer rentals, Greenwheels offers 1-day, 2-day, and week tariffs (excluding the kilometer rate). The day rates start at β¬29.
Anyone aged 18 or over can join Greenwheels. To sign up, you need to upload a copy of a valid (international) driver’s license and provide payment details (credit card or iDEAL through a Dutch bank account). Greenwheels also requires an initial refundable bond payment of β¬50.
Managing Greenwheels rentals can be done online or through the Greenwheels app. You can reserve any available car in the country for your desired time period.
To access a reserved Greenwheels car, simply swipe up in the app. Alternatively, you can use a Greenwheels pass or an OV-chip card by holding it against the card reader located behind the windscreen.
Once inside the car, enter your unique pin code on the on-board computer in the glove compartment. Retrieve the car key from the box and start the car normally. Before driving off, it’s recommended to inspect the vehicle briefly for any new damages and report them through the app.
After you finish driving, return the car to the same designated parking spot by the specified time. Place the key back into the computer and lock the car using your card or the app.
The Greenwheels program offers flexibility, allowing Regular and Frequent users to cancel reservations until the start of the booking. It’s also possible to extend the rental period, subject to availability. For weekend rentals, it’s advisable to book in advance due to high demand.
If the car needs fuel (it should be at least a quarter full at the end of your rental), Greenwheels covers the cost using a special fuel pass available inside the car. The pin code for the fuel pass will be displayed on the computer or app.
For electric vehicles, it’s important to reconnect the charging cable to the charging station.
Greenwheels is a convenient option for those who require occasional car usage when public transportation is not suitable. It alleviates concerns about maintenance costs, insurance, and residential parking fees.
